Lesson 01

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals

Phthalates, bisphenols (BPA, BPS), PFAS, and certain pesticides interfere with hormone signaling and are consistently associated with elevated inflammatory markers, insulin resistance, and thyroid dysfunction. The dose is small; the exposure is constant.

The high-leverage swaps
Water, food storage, and personal care.

Filter drinking water. Store food in glass, not plastic (never microwave in plastic). Choose fragrance-free personal care. These three habits displace most household exposure.

PFAS · 'Forever chemicals'

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances persist in the body for years. Found in non-stick cookware, water-resistant coatings, and much municipal water. Associated with elevated cholesterol, immune suppression, and thyroid effects.

Lesson 02

Air quality — the exposure you cannot see

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) crosses from lung to bloodstream and directly activates NF-kB in vascular endothelium. Chronic exposure is a cardiovascular risk factor on the order of smoking. Indoor air — where most people spend 90% of their time — is often worse than outdoor.

A single well-sized HEPA unit in the bedroom reduces PM2.5 exposure across the largest fraction of your day. Cross-ventilate when outdoor air is clean; close up when it is not.

PM2.5 · Fine particulate matter

Particles under 2.5 micrometers — small enough to cross the alveolar barrier. No safe threshold has been identified for long-term cardiovascular effects.

Lesson 03

Mold and the water-damaged environment

Water-damaged buildings can produce mycotoxins and inflammagens that activate innate immunity and drive chronic symptoms — fatigue, brain fog, air-hunger — long after visible mold is remediated. Suspect exposure when symptoms improve away from a specific building.

Lesson 04

The mouth — a systemic inflammatory driver

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection with systemic consequences. Bacteria and their inflammatory byproducts enter circulation with every chew and every brush, contributing to elevated hs-CRP, atherosclerosis, and insulin resistance. Treating periodontitis measurably lowers hs-CRP within months.

The forgotten leverage point
Floss daily. See a hygienist twice a year.

For anyone with elevated hs-CRP and no clear cause, gum health is worth investigating. Cheap, high-leverage, systematically under-addressed.

Action checklist
  • Filter drinking water; move food storage from plastic to glass or stainless.
  • Add a HEPA unit sized for your bedroom; run it while you sleep.
  • Check indoor humidity — keep it 30–50% to discourage mold growth.
  • Floss daily and book a dental cleaning if it has been more than six months.
  • Choose fragrance-free personal care; audit the top-five products you use most.
